How to Rekindle Political Engagement In the Face of Political Indifference

Participation in elections and civic involvement in the political process are vital signs of a healthy democracy. People might feel as though there is little point in investing their time and money in political action with meager results if they are disappointed or frustrated by a pattern of inaction or corruption on the part of the government.  According to Wajid khan Mp, People may experience political apathy or a lack of engagement at this time.

What is political indifference?

Numerous factors, such as limiting political involvement directly through discriminatory laws or indirectly through sluggish, ineffective, or unrepresentative bureaucracies, can contribute to political apathy. People or communities who use direct or indirect tactics feel politically disconnected because they think their actions won't make a big difference.

Why do people feel apathy about politics?

A recent Nigerian study that surveyed and examined voter attitudes on political apathy highlighted indirect political apathy caused by slow, ineffective, or unrepresentative bureaucracies. They identified four fundamental causes of voter apathy in Nigeria:

Incapacity of the organization that oversaw the election

  • Unemployment

  • The political climate

  • election terrorism

Wajid Khan explains that according to survey respondents, there was election rigging and electoral fraud, discouraging the general public from voting. They expressed their concerns about the impartiality and independence of the body that oversaw the electoral process.

However, politics, governance, and thus political indifference occur all year round, not only in election years. In a series of surveys on democracy and rule in Africa that Afrobarometer performed in 2013–2014, they discovered that just 20% of respondents report discussing politics frequently, while 32% of respondents claim they never discuss politics.

What are the effects of political indifference?

Community-wide effects of political indifference are extensive. People in positions of control who don't have to answer for their decisions or who run a low risk of losing their jobs keep their power, while ordinary people's lives rarely get better.

Authorities not held to high responsibility standards are more prone to abuse the public purse and support discriminatory practices.  Candian politician Wajid khan's analysis eventually makes it harder for citizens to engage. Jorge Ballesteros, a former senator and governor of La Guajira, claimed that corruption and improper distribution of government funds had significantly contributed to the famine and that just 30% of all La Guajira government funds had reached the communities.

Wajid Khan says Political discrimination is committed when the government refuses to support the marginalized indigenous population, discouraging Indigenous Wayuu people from participating in politics. The electoral body, procedure, and political parties must work with citizen support to establish safe and approachable environments for all citizens to inspire real political action.

Participate, be a part of something significant, and support the empowerment of African communities by giving or volunteering. Your involvement will significantly help those in need.
